Feeling feelings, the Work of Russell Dumas Through Whitehead’s Process and Reality

This paper is an attempt to look at dance through Whitehead’s Process and Reality, with a particular focus on feeling, both in the ordinary language of dance practice and according to Whitehead’s distinctive mode of analysis. Dance is discussed through the work of Russell Dumas, a postmodern choreographer with a specific choreographic approach and aesthetic. How does Whitehead’s account of process enhance the problematics of dancing as they arise within Dumas’ work? The discussion looks at the question of potential, as something the dancer aims to keep alive as she negotiates the choreographic score. What conditions potential, how is it kept alive, how does it relate to the momentary vicissitudes of dancing?

Cet article est une tentative d’approche de la danse par l’entremise de Process and Reality de Whitehead, avec une attention particulière au sentiment; et au niveau du langage commun de la pratique de la danse, et suivant le mode d’analyse propre à Whitehead. La danse est abordée à travers le travail du chorégraphe postmoderne Russell Dumas avec une approche chorégraphique et esthétique spécifique. De quelles façons la description de Whitehead du processus rehausse les problématiques en danse telles qu’elles émergent dans le travail de Dumas? La question du potentiel est considérée comme quelque chose que la danseuse tente de garder vivant alors qu’elle évolue à l’intérieur de la chorégraphie. Qu’est-ce qui conditionne le potentiel, comment est-il garder en vie, de quelles façons est-il relié aux vicissitudes momentanées de la danse?
